More Teens Waiting to Start Driving
Getting your driver’s license is a right-of-passage. But today’s teens aren’t rushing to hit the road. The Kansas City Star cites a recent study that finds almost half of all teens are waiting until they turn 18 to get their license. 20 years ago, two-thirds of teens had a license by the time they were 18. Many teens say gas prices make it too costly to drive.
Opinion: GOP at a Dead End Over Shutdown
In the Washington Post, Dana Milbank says the fact that House GOP leaders had a mortician lead them in the singing of Amazing Grace before Tuesday’s meeting was fitting, since they are “burying the republican brand and America’s standing in the world.” Milbank says if the Republicans get blamed for the shutdown and a default, the only way they’ll preserve their majority is with embalming fluid.

He says it worked flawlessly in all his tests. You just need to put your trust in the service. But he says Square does have a strong track record in its merchant business.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune says Facebook groups where people can sell their junk are gaining in popularity. One key difference between selling in a Facebook group and selling on Craigslist, you can see if you and the seller have a mutual friend, which offers you a certain level of comfort.
Gummi Bear Marketer Dies
Hans Riegel, the man who brought Gummi Bears to the masses, has died at 90. The New York Times says Riegel transformed his father’s small candy company into an international brand with 6,000 employees and more than $2 billion in annual sales. Haribo now makes more than 200 products, but none has proved to be as popular as the original Gummi Bear.
Lion Ranch Welcomes Four New Cubs
The Lion Habitat Ranch in Nevada welcomed four new cubs last week. The ranch is home to 56 lions. The Las Vegas Review Journal says caretaker Keith Evans has been bottle-feeding the cubs hourly because their mother, Cheeto, didn’t take care of them. VIDEO

Stubbs the cat has been the honorary mayor of tiny Talkeetna, Alaska for the past 16 years. He’s survived a bb gun shooting, a fall into a restaurant fryer, and a leap from a moving truck. But after a recent run-in with a dog that left him badly injured, the Wall Street Journal says the town is contemplating a regime change. There’s been talk of an election. But one resident admits, “those are difficult paws to fill.”
