A 17-year-old boy survived a jump from the Golden Gate Bridge reports the San Francisco Chronicle this morning. The boy was on a field trip with classmates when he leapt off the bridge at a spot more than 200 feet above the water. Witnesses say he may have been trying to impress his classmates. A surfer paddled out to retrieve the boy, who broke his tailbone and hurt his lungs in the fall. The surfer says when he reached him, the boy said he’d done it “for kicks.” The Chronicle says 99 percent of the 1,500-plus people who’ve jumped from the bridge since it opened in 1937 have not survived.
