Are Teens Weather Resistant?

Question: What kind of a crazy person would wear flip-flops and shorts outside in 23-degree weather? Answer: A teenager. According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, experts say that teen bodies experience cold in a different way than shivering adults do, which is why we tend to see so many of them on snow-covered streets wearing little more than a hoodie and jeans. As one Seton Hall junior put it: “There’s been no day when I was like, ‘Wow, I wish I had pants’.”

Dressing out of season is also sometimes a way for teens to show autonomy from their parents. But despite all the worried mothers out there, the Tribune-Review says teens are actually less susceptible to hypothermia than the rest of us.

In a semi-related story, the Cleveland Plain-Dealer looks at flu season myths in today’s paper, and consults with a doctor to get some answers on who should consider getting a flu vaccine.
