Rikers Dress Code Includes “Passion-Dampening” T-shirt

No shanks and no skanks. That, in a nutshell, is the new dress code that Rikers Island visitors must follow says the New York Daily News. Sick of monitoring meeting room hook-ups, the prison personnel will issue a “passion-dampening” t-shirt, available only in one size and color (XXL, neon green), to any female visitor who comes inappropriately dressed. The city paid $5000 for 800 shirts, which are laundered everyday.
Along with the prison-issued shirts, the new dress code bans spandex pants and skirts more than 3 inches above the knee. Jewerly other than a wedding ring is also verboten. But the department has purhcased 800 of its green cover up t-shirts. As one might imagine, the rule chance hasn’t been a popular one. As one woman forced to cover up put it: “You’re just trying to make me look bad in front of my man.”
