Plastic Ice an Affordable Option for Hockey Rinks


There’s an interesting New York Times sports piece about the advances made in plastic hockey ice—using a small town in my home province of Alberta as an example. A synthetic rink costs about one-fourth the price of a real one and the quality has improved so much over the last decade that many communities are considering the switch. Made from plastic sprayed with chemicals, synthetic rinks don’t require an expensive Zamboni or regular maintenance.
