Who You Know Matters in Job Search

It really is who you know. The New York Times says more employers are turning to their own employees to do the first round of vetting instead of using job posting sites like Monster.com. It’s a trend that has been amplified by the tight job market and the proliferation of networking sites like LinkedIn and Facebook. While companies insist they look at all applications, those with a personal connection tend to get fast-tacked. As one H.R. specialist puts it: “We call it Monster.ugly. In the H.R. world, applicants from Monster or other job boards carry a stigma.”
