Study: Heavy Smoking Leads to Dementia

A new study has found that middle-aged smokers are about 114 percent more likely to develop dementia in their old age than those who don’t smoke. The LA Times says while the effects of smoking on the lungs and the heart have long been documented, this is the first time its effects on the brain have been measured. The study also found that middle-age people who described themselves as former smokers did not seem to be affected by the added risk factor.
