Prisoner Has “Head for Hieroglyphics”


Some prisoners spend their time behind bars pumping iron. And some become self-taught experts in hieroglyphics. The LA Times has a great profile of Timothy Fenstermacher, who dropped out of high school but used the cartons of milk he got with every prison meal to make flash cards and teach himself Egyptian history. He’s forged relationships with experts in the field, who send him books on Egyptian grammar and articles they’ve recently published.
