Oscars Get a Boston Accent

Call them the Aww-scahs. After the announcement yesterday, it was clear that this year’s Oscars have “acquired a Boston accent” says the Boston Globe. Not only are two of the nominees for Best Picture (“The Social Network”; “The Fighter”) set in Massachusetts, many of this year’s critical successes (“Shutter Island” ; “Conviction” ; “The Company Men” ; “The Town”) were set in the area. The Globe says Hollywood’s recent fascination with Boston is due in part to hometown boosters Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and in part to movies like “Mystic River’’ and “The Departed’,” which made “the city’s grittiest streets a genre unto itself.”
