Opinion Pages Erupt After Selig Says He Won’t Reverse Call

The Wall Street Journal chides MLB commissioner Bud Selig on its opinion page for not overturning the umpire’s call in Wednesday’s almost perfect game, saying that the mistake will “hang over baseball forever.” The Journal says the gaffe is such a big deal because “the ‘perfect game’ in baseball’s big leagues exists as a hallowed rebuke to the sensible every-day notion that life isn’t perfect.

An editorial in the New York Daily News says even the law “makes proper allowances for bloopers” and asks whether Selig’s refusal to reverse the call means that he considers himself and MLB above the law. The News says Selig in a position to create a unique precedent: He can say that whenever a perfect game is ruined by a bad call on the 27th out, he will consider the videotape.
