Where is Waldo, really? That’s one of the “mind-stretching, offbeat or downright freaky essay questions” college hopefuls can expect to see as they start filling out applications, says the LA Times. Tired of reading “self-aggrandizing essays detailing their accomplishments and hardships,” schools around the country are spicing up the admissions process. The Waldo question is from the University of Chicago, here are some more examples: “Celebrate your nerdy side” (Tufts); “Please describe an unusual way in which you have fun” (CalTech); “A package arrives at your door. After seeing the contents you know it’s going to be the best day of your life. What’s inside and how do you spend your day?” (Brandeis).
