How do you solve a problem like…a socially challenged significant other? Beth Teitell of the Boston Globe says the holidays can be tough if you’re married to someone who has a penchant for publicly embarrassing themselves, or you. Add booze, a marathon of social engagements and a dash of family and the possibility that old embarrassments will surface is almost guaranteed.

Unfortunately, there’s not much hope for the inflicted: “A foot-in-mouth spouse gets something from their behavior that they so enjoy that they just cannot help themselves.’’ Some therapists say a code word or gesture might do the trick—if you can get your spouse to agree on one.
