KFC Uses Buns to Promote Bun-Less Sandwich

First they got rid of the buns, now they’ve discovered they need them. In a bid to promote their bun-less sandwich, USA Today says KFC is hiring college women to don fitted sweatpants with phrase “Double Down” written across their, what else, buns. You’ll remember that the Double Down is the latest affront to healthy eating, employing two pieces of fried chicken to stand in for the bun and adding bacon, cheese and something called the “Colonel’s sauce.”
The chain says it’s trying to shore up interest after a poll found that two-thirds of young Americans couldn’t identify Colonel Sanders. Interestingly, comments on the KFC’s Facebook page show the idea seems to be popular with lots of young women.
In a related story, Budweiser is also trying to expand its appeal with a younger audience by employing a surefire tactic—free beer. The company plans to hand out 500,000 free samples on September 29. I’ll be sure to stay home that day.
For a trip down memory lane, check out this hilarious essay by Kevin Pang of the Chicago Tribune, who says the Double Down ?has broken through a barrier of culinary decency, besmirching the good name of sandwiches and all that is honorable.?
