How to Throw a 100 MPH Pitch

Baseball fans will appreciate the interesting graphics in the Wall Street Journal this morning. They accompany a feature story about how many really fast pitchers there are in baseball this year. The Journal says after studying hundreds of photos researchers understand how to maximize a pitcher’s velocity. Turns out it’s a pretty complex operation to throw a 100 mph pitch, which is dependent on things like stride length (distance should be 79-89 percent of the pitcher’s height) and elbow flexion (in cocked position should be between 90 and 112 degrees.)
