Haiti’s National Drink


The news from Haiti over the past few weeks has been marked by tales of tragedy and struggle. But in this morning’s paper, the LA Times profiles an enduring tradition in the country, one that has remained unchanged for more than 150 years: Barbancourt Rum. The factory was damaged in the earthquake and 250 members of the company’s staff were killed, but this week, the distillery, which has provided a rare constant in Haitian life, was open and filling orders.
