Germany to Abandon Nuclear Energy

Germany has announced that it will phase out its nuclear reactors over the next decade and not build any new ones. The plan calls for the country’s 17 nuclear plants to be fully shuttered by 2022. The Washington Post says the decision is fallout from the disaster in Japan earlier this year. It will be the first industrialized nation to go nuclear free.  Germany, which receives about a quarter of its power from nuclear energy, has also promised to cut its total energy use by 10 percent.
