FBI Hopes Soap-Watching Women Can Find Mobster

The FBI has turned to an interesting crime-fighting partner says the Boston Globe: soap opera-watching women. The latest attempt to catch elusive gangster James “Whitey’’ Bulger, who’s been on the run since 1995, is a series of 30-second daytime TV commercials which focus on Bulger’s longtime companion, Catherine Greig. Authorities hope a woman will recognize Greig and give them a fresh lead. The ads are to run during shows like “The View,’’ “Ellen,’’ and “Live with Regis & Kelly.’’ Experts say they picked shows with target demographics similar to Greig’s own age. Authorities think Grier, who has a penchant for beauty salons, will be easier to identify.

The Globe put together a list of all the (unsuccessful) tactics used by the FBI over the years.
