ESL Students Exempt From English Graduation Requirement


Reading and writing in English are no longer skills required for some high school graduates in Oregon. The state’s Board of Education has decided that foreign-born students who have lived in the US for less than five years can satisfy reading and writing requirements in their native language reports the Oregonian. Says the chairman of the Board: “If you can demonstrate mastery in another language and you’re on course in learning English, it makes sense.”
