Don’t Call Me Grandma


Nana, Nona, Glam-ma—is a grandma by any other name still a grandma? The Detroit Free-Press says as baby boomers enter the grandparent stage of their lives, they are rejecting the tradition labels that come with it.

Besides the desire to appear youthful, sometimes an alternate name is necessary, especially when divorce has multiplied the number of grandparents a young child has in their life. Adopting the foreign equivalent seems like a popular way to avoid the straight-up grandma: Abuela, Oma and even Bubbe are all seeing a resurgence.
