The Wall Street Journal outlines a simple-and-smart plan out of Detroit to improve gas mileage: make cars that weigh less. Instead of steel, auto makers are playing around with materials like plastics, aluminum and magnesium, which are lighter and are often used in high-end racing cars. For example: a prototype of Ford’s classic F-150 made with aluminum weighs 700 pounds less than the current steel model.
