Couple Ousted From Hotel For Writing Bad Review

It seems like a complimentary breakfast might be a better public relations strategy than this: USA Today says a British couple were forced from a hotel they were staying at by the police after the hotel manager accused them of writing a bad review on TripAdvisor. No refund, no nothing.

To add insult to injury, the Blackpool Gazette says the man had checked into the hotel with his wife to recover from his latest round of chemotherapy. The article doesn’t confirm whether the did actually write a scathing review but if they did, they weren’t alone: 59 percent of the TripAdvisor reviews did not recommend the hotel. And the owner appears to have some very thin skin. He makes a habit of responding defensively to the 87 reviews categorizes as terrible. He also seems to make a habit of booting unhappy guests. Read the terrible reviews, and the owner’s catty rejoinders here

In a somewhat related story, USA Today says more and more hotels are adopting a two-tiered Internet strategy, offering customers low-speed Internet access for free and faster connections at a premium. The strategy lets guest check email and Facebook for free but charges once they start browsing or looking at YouTube videos. Noting the prevalence of free and fast Internet at many cafes and restaurants, one analyst says it?s stupid for an expensive hotel to offer such an inferior product.
