Chocolate Gravy, A Southern Favorite

From cold pizza to fermented fish, people eat a lot of odd things for breakfast. But have you ever heard of chocolate gravy? Even though it sounds like the fantasy of some vegetable-hating child, the Kansas City Star says chocolate gravy is a old-time favorite of those from Appalachia and the Deep South. Food historians say it started appearing on tables shortly after Hershey’s cocoa began appearing on store shelves.

The Star offers this recipe, for those who want to attempt a batch at home:

3/4 cup sugar

3 tablespoons cocoa

4 tablespoons flour

3 cups milk

2 tablespoons butter

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Mix sugar, cocoa and flour together in a saucepan. Cook over low heat, slowly adding milk and butter. Stir constantly to remove any lumps. When the mixture reaches a pudding-like consistency, remove from heat and add vanilla.
