Arizona Gunman Gets Unabomber Lawyer

The Arizona Republic says when Jared Loughner appears in court this afternoon, he’ll be represented by the same attorney that took on the Unabomber, the Atlanta Olympics bomber and Susan Smith, the South Carolina woman who drowned her two children by driving into a lake. As of now, Loughner faces at least five federal felonies and prosecutors are mulling whether or not to seek the death penalty.
He’ll also face charges for the four other people he killed and the 11 others he injured. A local defense attorney told the Republic his first move would be trying to get a change of venue: “You do not want to be in the same venue where someone killed ... a judge and a 9-year-old who was born on 9/11, for heaven’s sake.”
The child he’s referring to is nine-year-old Christina Taylor Green. She was one of the six victims of Saturday’s shooting spree. She’s also the granddaughter of veteran Yankees and Mets manager Dallas Green. The New York Daily News has an interview with Green in this morning’s paper.
