The Health Benefits of the Slurpee

Some people like beer. Some like wine. My favorite drink is the Slurpee. Two great things have happened this week: a 7-11 opened within walking distance of my apartment, and an article in the New York Times introduced me to research that the “slushie” has a potential health benefit.

Now, to achieve this health benefit, you have to combine the Slurpee and exercise, which to me seems like a problem. I’ve enjoyed many a Slurpee after some sort of outdoor activity on a hot day, but never the other way around. In the New York Times’ Personal Best column, writer Gina Kolata describes a study that says endurance increased in men who drank a “syrup-flavored ice slurry” just before exercising.
