Nominate Your Favorite Educator for a Hero Award

The Daily News will focus on educators for its next Hometown Heroes Awards ceremony. I’ll be hosting the event, and to kick off the nomination period the paper had me write a short article about education and what makes a good teacher. To answer their question, I looked at the teachers I had growing up, the ones that inspire my two daughters and turned to my mom, who spent her career as an elementary school educator. The thing that stood out for all of us were those teachers with an ability to connect with students on a personal level. In the world of standardized tests and entrance exams that we live in, noticing what makes each kid unique is what makes good teachers shine.
