1. Pat on Alberta Primetime: 10th Anniversary

Another of the many interviews I did this week looking back at the September 11th terrorist attacks. I spoke to Michael Higgins, host and producer of the Edmonton-based program Alberta Primetime.

  2. Pat’s September 11th, 2001 NY1 News Diary

I’m moderating a September 11th panel discussion tonight at the Paley Center. We’ve assembled a group of 8 NY1 journalists to tell the stories of how they covered the events of the day 10 years ago. As I prepare for that event, I pulled up the minute-by-minute recap of my day, which I wrote late on the night of September 11, 2001. It’s reprinted here in its entirety.

  3. O America! Canada Salutes American Songbook

On Canada Day this year, I stood up in front of a crowd at Joe’s Pub and belted out O Canada. Now the team that staged the event is hosting another one to commemorate September 11. Called “Canada Sings the American Songbook: A Canadian Tribute to New York,” the night of music will feature a “top-flight roster of Canadian musical talent performing a set list that samples over 100 years of American song writing.” But sadly, fans, no Pat Kiernan.

For as long as I can remember, Lloyd Robertson was the national news anchor for CTV. He was the news anchor Canadians trusted, and long before I got into TV news it was clear that he was someone who set the standard. Lloyd retired tonight. Canadians will miss his familiar voice.

  7. VIDEO: “Emotional” Recorder Solo

I was cracking up this morning at 5:19, thanks to Australian news anchor Lisa Wilkinson. Every time I see a clip of Wilkinson, I like her more. And she didn’t disappoint with the video she posted on Twitter, of New Zealand comedian, Matt Mulholland doing his hilarious rendition of the Titanic theme…on the recorder.

  8. Today’s Starbucks Alter Ego: “Early”

Today’s Alter Ego comes from Pat’s Papers reader Harley. He writes: “I always play the Starbucks name game, knowing they’ll almost never get mine right. This was a good one.” We agree.

  9. Recap: NY1’s Irene Coverage Best in Show

If you missed NY1’s Hurricane Irene coverage over the weekend, there’s an extensive play-by-play of it on Capital New York this morning. I spent a long time talking to Tom McGeveran about our approach to the storm coverage, which he crowned as the best in show, writing that “NY1’s storm package was evidence that you can sell news without hysteria, and that real knowledge and honesty beat showmanship.”
