A harrowing rescue effort by quick-acting firemen, lifeguards and bystanders saved the life of a teenage boy who was buried underground for 27 minutes after a sand pit collapsed on him. The Orange County Register says the boy and some friends were digging tunnels in the sand, trying to get them to meet when they collapsed on him. Immediately the rescue effort began with more than 40 people frantically shoveling off the seven feet of sand. When they finally reached the boy and he showed signs of life, the crowded beach erupted in cheers, say onlookers.
