State-Mandated Hair Styles

There are certain hairstyles (the mullet and the faux hawk come to mind) that I’ve put a personal ban on. But the New York Times says Iran’s Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance has taken a more official approach. The department just released a series of photos featuring several hairstyles that it says are suitable for male citizens. The state-sanctioned styling advice is the latest attempt to steer the country away from western influences. Interestingly, the Times notes that none of the photos feature a long beard, commonly thought to be the hallmark of devotion in Islamic cultures.
