Hi-Tech Innovation Allows Communcation Beyond the Grave

Now there’s a way for the dead to communicate what their life was all about from beyond the grave. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says something called “Memory Medallions” are the new fad in the funeral industry. Inspired by the idea that a person’s life is represented only by a “dash between the birth and death dates on a tombstone,” the medallions are high-tech dots with bar codes that direct cell phones to photos, videos and websites about the deceased’s life.  Company officials say the proliferation of smartphones has helped their business boom because now people don’t have to lug their laptops to the cemetery with them. Plans for a September 11 memorial using Memory Medallions is in the works. The standard package costs around $225 and includes a “website of eight photos and 1,000-word story and a printed biography.”
