Gaga Fans Swamp Amazon for Cheap Downloads

Unconvinced of Lady Gaga’s popularity? Yesterday, her fans managed to topple Amazon’s servers in a mad dash to download her newest album at the one-day-only price of 99 cents. But the New York Times says yesterday’s kerfuffle did more than just illustrate the ardor of her fans—it was a clear lesson in the “pitfalls of cloud computing.” Many saw Amazon’s move yesterday as a strike directed at iTunes and Apple, which is rumored to be creating a cloud service of its own. Unfortunately, it seemed to be an uncalculated one. The demand was so high that Amazon’s servers stalled out causing frustration among Gaga’s fans and a torrent of angry Twitter messages.
