For Birds, Cats Still Public Enemy No. 1

According to the New York Times, Tweety was right. A new study has found that house cats are still a bird’s worst nightmare: Of the 80 percent killed by predators, house cats were responsible for a whopping 47 percent of those deaths. The American Bird Conservancy estimates that cats are responsible for about 500 million bird deaths each year. Some experts regard house cats as an invasive species—“they are like gypsy moths and kudzu”—with no natural enemies to keep their numbers in check.
