A History of Brackets


With March Madness underway, “bracket” is the word du jour, but where did the idea come from? This morning, the Wall Street Journal investigates. The short answer is that no one quite knows. The idea of a ” single-elimination sporting competition with many rounds” has been around since the ancient Greeks. Another theory is that NCAA brackets evolved from an organizational form we’re all familiar with—the family tree.
