Printing press is big bet on newspapers

There’s an interesting take on the future of the newspaper business in the New York Times

The New York Daily News has just sunk $150 million into new printing presses that can deliver crisp color on every page.  The Times says the decision is “a statement of faith that print will still be big business for another decade or two, if not longer.”  Publisher Mort Zuckerman tells the Times, “I?ve been a contrarian for my entire business career.?

The Times article focuses on the appeal of better color reproduction for advertisers.  But the key benefit from my perspective is on content.  The new presses are faster, meaning deadlines can be later.  The morning paper will be in a better position to compete with online news and morning TV, because breaking news and late sports scores are more likely to make deadline.
