Can’t people just have Thanksgiving off?

Wal-Mart employees may have to celebrate Thanksgiving in Aisle 12.

The country’s biggest retailer is joining the list of stores open on Thanksgiving—and is presenting it as a safety measure. By having the stores open well before “Black Friday” bargains begin, the company hopes to avoid a mad dash at the doors.

I don’t dispute that it’s a good idea to disperse the door-crasher crowds.  But is it too much to ask that people get to spend the day with their families?  I think we’d all survive without shopping on Thanksgiving Day.
